SUPERCHARGE AMERICA sees several near-term “wins” to accelerate America's transition to clean energy and clean transportation, all while boosting our economy.
We are planning a year of advocacy for policies and ideas that could significantly improve our future. One of the innovative proposals we support (and the first for which we’re advocating) is called the “eRIN program,” managed by the EPA.
What’s an “eRIN”?
The EPA proposed something called the “eRIN program” (electric Renewable Identification Numbers) in late 2022. The idea is pretty cool - and has bipartisan support. The program would help landfills, farms, and others capture one of the worst greenhouse gasses -- methane gas -- turn it into clean energy, and power electric vehicles (EVs).
The eRIN program would empower many small businesses -- smaller landfills and family farms -- to produce clean energy for the first time, boosting America’s domestic energy market. It would also support EV production. All of this makes America more competitive globally.
Ok, but explain it to me step by step.
Step 1. Capture Methane Gas: Landfills, farms, wastewater treatment facilities, and food waste processors can set up systems to capture methane that is emitted from decomposing waste.
Step 2. Convert to Energy: This captured methane is then used in a generator to produce clean energy.
Step 3. Connect the Energy to EVs: Once the energy is produced, the producer can work with EV manufacturers to connect it to EVs to charge.
And then what...?
Step 4. Earn & Trade eRINs: For producing this clean energy and powering EVs with it, the local producers can earn “eRIN credits.” These can be sold for a cash to oil and gas companies, which are required to buy them to reduce pollution.
Step 5. Supercharge America: The result? When Americans plug in their electric cars, more of the energy will come from clean sources rather than polluting sources, helping to accelerate one of the country’s fastest-growing (and, dare we say, fastest-driving) industries.
